Kristi Jones Designs :: Jewelry Lengths

    Jewelry Lengths

This section will cover how to appropriately choose lengths for jewelry.

There are three jewelry pieces you will need to choose lengths for. These are necklaces, bracelets, and anklets. All pieces are measured in inches from end to end (including toggle clasps). In other words, toggle clasps ARE included in the overall lengths given for jewelry.

All necklaces, bracelets, and anklets are finished with toggle clasps. Lariats are unattached at the ends, in other words, they have no clasps. While super convenient and easy to use, unfortunately, toggle clasps do not allow for adjustable lengths, like some clasps; therefore, it will be important to determine which lengths are right for you.

NECKLACE LENGTHS

Necklaces are available in 16 (Petite), 18 (standard), 20 (standard/large), 22, 24, and 26 inches (the last three lengths are considered plus sizes).

BRACELET LENGTHS

Bracelets are available in 6.5 (Petite), 7.5 (Standard), 8 (Standard/Large), 9, 10, and 11 inches (Plus size).

7-8 inches are standard bracelet sizes. For chunkier size bracelets, such as those with large kukui nuts (Hawaiian Collection), remember you will need to add 1.25 or 1.50 inches to your wrist size.

ANKLET LENGTHS

Anklets are available in 9 (Petite), 10 (Standard), 11 (Standard/Large), 12, 13, and 14 inches (Plus size).

9-11 inches are the most common anklet lengths.

GENERAL GUIDELINES TO DETERMINE LENGTHS

To choose an appropriate length for a necklace, bracelet, or anklet, first determine several factors:

1) Your body size. Are you petite, average build, or plus size? If you are petite or plus size, jewelry lengths will fit you differently.

2) Taking measurements.

a) Use necklaces/braclets/anklets you already have as a guide. Measure these from end to end, put them on, observe in a mirror, and compare the length of these to the jewelry you are considering buying.

b) Take a long chain or cut a string 20 inches and gently hold it end to end around your neck/wrist/ankle. Determine the most comfortable length, measure it, and that should be the exact length for you.

3) For necklaces, determine how long you want the necklace to fall on your body. Necklace lengths fall into various catagories:

a) SHORT LENGTHS fall in two categories, collars and chokers. Collars, usually 12-13 inches, lie snugly on the middle of the neck. Chokers fall just above the collarbone and accent your neckline. Typical choker lengths are 14 to 16 inches. Necklaces or chokers with attached pendants will lie just above the breastbone. Chokers fit women with petite frames very nicely. If your frame is slightly larger, a princess length may fit you more comfortably than the choker.

b) MEDIUM LENGTHS, called princess, measure 17 to 19 inchs with 18 inches as ideal. Princess lengths hang just over or slightly below the collarbone. This is the most common necklace length. Princess is also a good length for necklaces with a pendant. Keep in mind that an 18 inch necklace with a pendant will hang farther down on a petite woman.

c) LONG LENGTHS, called matinee, hang much lower, extending to the breast area. Typical matinee lengths are 20 to 24 inches. These are also considered plus sizes for women with larger frames.

d) VERY LONG LENGTHS, called opera, fall at or below the bustline, and are designed to drape over the mid-section. Opera lengths are 28 to 34 inches, and can be doubled serving as a double strand choker.

e) SUPER LONG LENGTHS, are referred to as a rope or lariat. Lariats are 40 inches or longer, and can be created into a multi-strand necklace or bracelet. Lariats are left unattached (no clasps) at the ends for knotting or wrapping around the neck, similar to a scarf.

4) Pendants are NOT included in necklace lengths as noted above. Consider this when making your selection. In other words, the shell pendants will fall below the necklace length you pick. Be sure to determine where you want the pendant to fall on your body when wearing your necklace.

5) Consider the clothes (and necklines) you will wear with the necklace. For example, will it be a strapless top, a tank top, or a turtleneck sweater? I prefer a 16 inch necklace (with a pendant) to wear with my tank tops; however, when I wear turtleneck sweaters, I prefer longer necklace lengths, such as an 18 inch, as the other length fits way too snugly.

a) Collar lengths go well with V-neck, boat neck, or off the shoulder necklines.

b) Chokers fit just about any neckline.

c) Princess lengths fit crew or high necklines, as well as low plunging necklines.

6) Necklaces for men. The following is a guideline for men's necklace lengths. Keep in mind that for larger frames and/or wider necks, the next size up may be more appropriate.

18 inch (base of the neck)

20 inch (to the collarbone)

22 inch (a few inches below the collarbone)

24 inch (just above the sternum)

7) Special Orders: If you see a piece of jewelry that is not available in a size that you would prefer, please email us (orders@krisitjones.com) to place a special order and size.
